Breakin' Two

Poor Breakdown.  He takes a lot of crap, almost as much as Aiden.  But... I don't think he'll be taking it anymore after this.

He looks silly in that tiny desk, though.

The Super University, you may have figured out, is just a repurposed "X-Mansion," or, rather, a repurposed Raven Institute as suggested by Jason.  But I can't help to sometimes draw things the way I remember them from my highschool, like those desks, for example.  While they were fine for us, they'd be considerably less so for a large person like Breakdown.  

I haven't drawn Trash sitting at a desk yet.  It would be physically impossible.  He probably just sits on the crushed remnants of a desk in every class.

The Walters File: Spectacular

Spectacular is a totally original character and not based on anyone at all.

Well, okay.  The truth is I wanted a science teacher, but I didn't want to use my Iron Man spin-off, Warmonger, because I wanted to have a gadget class separate from science class, which my Batman spin-off would have taught if not for the fact I wanted him for my Combat Ed. class.  A Mr. Fantastic spin-off was the obvious solution.  

I've never been much of a fan of the Fantastic Four.  I appreciate what they were when they emerged onto the comics scene (in my opinion they were the first great super-team; rather than a collection of established heroes, they came out on their own, together).  But now, like just about every character DC has, they just feel too dated to me.  I feel like it does some characters a real injustice to continue to use them and constantly reinvent them.

I can remember reading things with Mr. Fantastic from back in the day where he angrily lashed out at Sue Storm for interrupting his work, and so I wanted my version to be like that all the time.  To Spectacular, nothing's more important than whatever it is he is working on at the moment, damn everyone else and sucks to the consequences.  He's the smartest guy around and he knows it, so he acts like it.  It's hard to imagine someone being humble and wholesome who's as smart as that.  If anything, they'd at the very least find it difficult to relate to others in a social setting.  Spectacular (which sometimes, in my head, I pronounce as Spectacu-lahr) takes that to the next level.  He doesn't bother trying to relate with others, because they're just not as spectacular as he is, anyway.

I had some good numbers from Facebook last week, and I want to thank everyone for helping me get the word out.  I'm also getting a fair amount of Project Wonderful redirects, so welcome all you new potential Super U. fans, thanks for coming, and I hope you like what you see.

Being that this is the 69th strip, I decided to continue the "naughtiness" from last week.  Naturally, that means this strip had to feature Ecstasy.  

I think I mentioned this before, but I created Ecstasy in 7th grade solely based off of a White Queen trading card.  In the incarnation of my comic at the time (I think that one made it to about 11 pages), the central characters formed a super-group, and Ecstasy was their leader.  She hasn't changed much since then, with the exception that now she's in a parody universe, so she has to be funny.

There was going to a be an android member of the team back then, and I was going to have Ecstasy be the one who built it.  I also used to draw her with mechanical bladed gauntlets on her forearms that she focused her electricity powers through, and she had made those, too.  I like the dichotomy of a very intelligent female character who hides it behind overt sexuality.  She's more complicated than she seems, but I'll get into some of that a bit more when it's her turn to have a Walters File.

Also, this is the first time I've really featured Spectacular, the instructor, aside from a few cameos.  I like to draw him like a huge creep, and anyone who's kept up with Jason's stories knows that he certainly is one.

Are you guys watching Strip Search at Penny Arcade yet?  I wasn't expecting that shit when Amy got eliminated.  I kind of had her pegged as the one who was going to win.  I hope they kick Abby's butt off the show this Friday.  She seems like a fun person, and her stuff certainly isn't garbage, but that doesn't mean she shouldn't have been the first one to go.  I know they likely won't do the same thing twice, but I'm kind of hoping they bring Nick back.  I also kind of think Tavis might win it all.  He seems to be the fan favorite.  I've checked out his strips, and I'm not impressed, despite that fact the most of his stuff I've seen outside the strips has been pretty damn good... with the exception of the hands and arms he draws.  They drive me insane.  Yeah, I'm just a little bit hooked on this show.

Staff Infection

Doing a little better this week.  Got out this weekend to Bok Tower, which is about an hour from my apartment.  And my wife ran across this incredible thing that we are planning to make a whole weekend out of during their "Hatsume Fair," which I gather is some sort of spring festival.  We had no idea such a place existed in Florida, let alone only a few hours from here.  Knowing there are things like this outside of Tourist Hell, Florida is helping me to come to terms with the reality that I may be living here for the next third of a century or so.   It's nice to have something to look forward to.

A short strip this week.  I had some ideas where I would introduce Dean Clobber, Disciplinary Head, in the third panel, and I wanted to give him a ridiculous "It's Clobberin' Time!"-esque catchphrase, but I drew a blank.  But, nevertheless, I like how it came out.

I think once I hit the end of Chapter One on the "official site" I'm going to ditch Interrupted Reality.  It looked promising at first, but it has yet to bear fruit.  I still plan on, after the end of Chapter Two here in another 23 strips or so, taking another hiatus to YouTube-ify the Chapter, with the goal of 2 movies a week, I think.  Maybe I'll spread them out to trick myself into thinking the sites are getting more attention than they truly are.
