War Games - Part 5

Shit's gettin' real now, son.  And by real, I mean fictional, illustrated characters participating in a holographic simulation.  So, the opposite of real, I guess.

I'm trying out a new site design (again).  I hope you like it.  It was feeling a little "loud."  Still terrible navigation, though... possibly even worse than before.  Any of my friends want to take a peak at my HTML and tell me how to move that "HOME / OLDER POSTS" text from the bottom of the page up to the top?  I can't even find it in the code.  It's entirely possible Blogspot won' t let me.

War Games - Part 3

If you're new to Super U., you may be wondering why suddenly I'm using photos as background instead of drawing it out.  You may be thinking I'm lazy.  In fact, you'd be right, but moreover, I use photos as background during the "Dangerous Room" sequences, when the students are participating in holographic simulations in Combat Education class.

Teams have been chosen.  Roles are being assigned.  On Thursday, you'll get a glimpse of Team Frost and Team Ex doing the same... and then the fur is gonna fly.

War Games - Part 2

Aiden hasn't been an outright lech in a while, so I thought it was about time he got back to that.  Still, it's good to see him back to his old self again.  Or, at least, the self he most recently created for himself.

I was up until the wee hours of the morning the other night mapping out the rest of the chapter, which in turn caused me to get incredibly tired last night and have to finish the strip this morning, so sorry it's a little tardy.  But thankfully I did, because as it turns out I'm going to need every available strip to finish this story arc.   I hope you're in for lots of action and excitement instead of the usual (which I guess could be classified as wannabe superheroes behaving badly).

The Walters Files: The Red Ring

I used a Green Lantern character in the RPG, but I drastically changed him for this comic.  First of all, he originally looked too much like how I currently draw Daemon, with a dark suit, short black hair and a goatee.  And since this is a parody comic, I wanted a gimmick.  The "Red Ring" motif, in case you couldn't tell, comes from the "red rings of death" phenomenon many X-Box users experienced when their systems died.  Being a Playstation fan, I couldn't pass the opportunity to poke a little fun at Microsoft.  I mean, Red Ring's symbol is actually the red ring of death.

Red Ring is a pretty minor character in the grand scheme of things.  Recently I hooked him up with Hydro.  I promise, though, that the "red ring" idea initially had no allusion toward sphincters, though now I am finding the whole thing ironic and humorous.

Aftermath - Part 2

It's fun, sometimes, when dialogue isn't necessary.

Back when I used to party (and when I had friends), usually I was the one who woke up around dawn on the bathroom floor.  It's just so nice and cold there, you know?

There's a trend in comics (and sometimes even webcomics) to have superheroes that are outside of the social "norm" (and I use that term as loosely as possible), and by that I mean Muslim superheroes, gay superheroes and so on.  The part that amuses me is, generally, when a gay superhero shows up in comics, she's a lesbian.  Right, because we're supposed to believe that you're featuring a lesbian superhero because you're standing up for the rights of lesbians, and not at all because you're catering to your male-dominated audience who wants to see pictures of girls kissing.  Compare the ratio of gay female characters to gay male characters.

What's more, generally when a male superhero comes out, it tends to be a character most readers could care less about.  Northstar, anybody?

I'm not claiming to be breaking any new ground here, of course.  Just an observation.  There are a few exceptions, of course.  And, to be fair, especially in the past year or two, comic writers finally seem to be getting wise to the lopsided representation of homosexual supers, and we're starting to see a lot more male couples.  I just read that, in X-Factor, Shatterstar and Rictor have gotten together.  Coincidentally, I also heard the title was cancelled this year.

I have / had a homophobic friend who's favorite character was Shatterstar.  I wonder if I should tell him? :-)

Spiritorum Awayos

It occurred to me I have characters I haven't used since Chapter 1, Conjuressa, the magic teacher, being one of them.  Even then, at the time, she was just a sight gag.  I'll have to do a Walters File for her pretty soon.  Of course, if you're interested in her background, or any teacher's for that matter, you can always head over to the SSS and look up their name in the tag cloud.  And if there's ever a character you'd like to see all the strips he or she is present in here at Super U., just click on their label below any post they're in (or go to their Walters File and find their label there).

I doubt I need to prove how much of a geek I am, but here's another example: not only have I created fictional elective classes for my fictional students, but I put some thought into which students would take Comprehension of the Arcane Arts, which students would take Archery and Marksmanship and which students didn't give a crap about either one of those classes and elected to take nothing at all during their 7th period.

At least once per chapter, I like to take you through a typical day at Super U., class by class.  The last several strips have reflected the students' classes, in order.  That said, the next class should be World History with The Commander, but I'm gonna have to skip that one this time around because I've been chomping at the bit to get to 9th period, which is Combat Education with Mr. Walters.  

Now that Birdo and E.P.I.C. are dead, and Bobby Rocket's in jail, Mr. Walters is going to have to make further adjustments to the Combat Education teams.  SPOILER: It still won't go well for Aiden.

There's another reason I need to skip it, too.  See, this strip here is #98, which means I've almost hit my 100th strip.  And there's something special I want to do.

Managed to get a strip up before I head out of town for a few days.  I won't be able to post a strip on Tuesday, but it seems likely I will have some rad guest art for you to affix your peepers to instead.  If you haven't seen Mason's work yet, click on his name over in the tag cloud.  It's good stuff.

Hail To The King

You know what's the most exciting part about Florida?  The insects.  You'll never have the same painful reaction from a bite twice.

It was cool, though, getting to see much of the Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot.  We missed the actual festival due to my being crippled with pain and a having leg swollen like a tree trunk from a few fly-bites, but I was able to walk again by the day after it ended, and fortunately for us they hadn't taken away all the flowers yet.

This comic is a quick interlude that I wasn't sure where to interject, so it found its way here.  We'll return to the madcap hijinx of Team Dick-Punch next week.
